Bailter Space is a New Zealand noise rock band formed 1986 in Christchurch, by Alister Parker (guitar, vocals, effects), Hamish Kilgour (drums, vocals), Glenda Bills (keyboards) and Ross Humphries (guitar). Parker was previously in cult post punk outfit The Gordons, and Kilgour was with The Clean. The lineup changed in the late '80's with the departure of Kilgour, Bills and Humphries, and the re-unity of Parker with former Gordons bass/drums pairing John Halvorsen and Brent McLachlan, thus regrouping as a three piece. Originally on Flying Nun Records, they relocated to the USA and signed with Matador. Their drone-like sound has been described as simultaneously beautiful, jagged, atonal, and supremely melodic. Some critics have likened their sound to bands like Sonic Youth and Pixies. Standout albums include Thermos, Robot World, Vortura and Capsul. The band is currently based in New York and their latest albums release was 2020's Concret.
