10cc was an English rock band founded 1972 in Stockport, UK, by Eric Stewart (vocals, guitar), Lol Creme (vocals, guitar), Kevin Godley (drums, vocals) and Graham Gouldman (bass, vocals). They achieved great commercial success in the 1970s with their exquisitely produced art-pop songs and concept albums based mainly on the songwriting talents of Godley and Creme. Godley and Creme had worked together for many years, their first single "I'm Beside Myself" b/w "Animal Song", credited to Frabjoy and Runcible Spoon, was released in 1969 and produced by ex-Yardbirds manager Georgio Gomelsky. Future 10cc members Stewart and Gouldman were both session players on that recording. Every member of 10cc was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer, and the writing teams frequently switched partners, so that Godley and Gouldman or Creme and Stewart compositions were not uncommon. Their sound was typified by pop gems such as "Rubber Bullets", "I'm Not in Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday", which were pop songs with sufficient musical finesse to keep rock audiences engaged. The band also founded Strawberry Studios Manchester, which was used by other major artists such as Joy Division, Neil Sedaka, Barclay James Harvest, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard. 1973-77 was 10cc's most creative period when they released five excellent albums: 10cc (1973), Sheet Music (1974), The Original Soundtrack (1975), How Dare You! (1976) and Deceptive Bends (1977). Godley & Creme split from 10cc in 1976, but continued working and releasing albums as a duo. Legend has it that the band name "10cc" relates to the expression "not your average wet dream", based on the average volume of a man's ejaculate being 9cc's.
