Death’s Dynamic Shroud aka death’s dynamic shroud.wmv is a collaborative vaporwave project between James Webster, Tech Honors and Keith Rankin, formed 2014 in Philadelphia, USA. Their signature sound typically samples video game soundtracks and 21st century pop songs in a mixtape-style format, oftentimes with special distortions and modifications made as a result of being bounced off analog recordings. Prior to forming DDS the three founders were active within the Dayton, Ohio music scene on various projects. Since their teens, Honors and Webster played together in the space-rock band The Sailing, with Honors on vocals and keyboard, and Webster on vocals and guitar. Rankin founded Orange Milk Records with Seth Graham in 2011, and Honors, Webster, and Rankin, all took turns writing and publishing one song a day to Soundcloud under the pseudonym Rebecca Peake. Honors and Webster later released albums compiling tracks from each month through Bandcamp, three of which were given official cassette releases via Squids Eye Tapes. The band members continued to release more works under various labels and aliases, increasingly influenced by vapourwave, which is an electronic music sub-genre characterised by slowed-down, chopped and treated samples of smooth jazz, elevator music and lounge music. In 2015, during the creation of their most popular and critically acclaimed album, I'll Try Living Like This, Keith Rankin’s addition to the group brought a much more high-fidelity, experimental sound (including sampling of anime soundtracks and k-pop) to the music, a shift that has helped the group form their distinct sound and visual aesthetic they personally refer to as “NUWRLD”. An extremely prolific recording outfit, to-date they have released over 50 studio albums, plus singles and EP's. Standout releases include Regret (2014), I'll Try Living Like This (2015), Heavy Black Heart (2017), Faith in Persona (2021), Transcendence Bot (2022), Darklife (2022), Live From Japan (2019), American Candy (2024), and You Like Music (2024). You Like Music was made in collaboration with Galen Tipton aka recovery girl, an electronic music artist and member of digifae. DDS's works are self released by Ghost Diamond which is the collective body of music created by Tech Honors and James Webster.
