Boris Claudio "Lalo" Schifrin is an Argentine-American pianist, composer, arranger and conductor born 1932 in Buenos Aires. He is best known for his large body of film and TV scores including Cool Hand Luke, Mission: Impossible, Bullitt, Dirty Harry, and Enter the Dragon. Associated with the jazz music genre, Schifrin is also noted for his collaborations with Clint Eastwood from the late 1960s to the 1980s, particularly the Dirty Harry series of films. After extensive formal music studies in Buenos Aires and Paris, Schifrin played piano with Argentine legend Astor Piazzolla and represented his country at the 1955 International Jazz Festival in Paris. Upon returning home in his twenties, Schifrin formed a 16 piece jazz orchestra that became part of a popular weekly variety show on Buenos Aires TV. Schifrin began accepting more film, television and radio assignments. In 1956 he Dizzy Gillespie and wrote an extended work for Gillespie's big band. The work, entitled Gillespiana, was completed in 1958. In 1960 Gillespie invited Schifrin to fill the piano chair in his quintet. Schifrin moved to NYC to join Gillespie, where he mixed with other jazz players such as sax-man Johnny Hodges. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offered the composer his first Hollywood film assignment with the African adventure Rhino! Schifrin moved to Los Angeles in 1963 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1969. Over the course of his career Lalo Schifrin has received five Grammy Awards and six Academy Award nominations for his soundtrack works. Standout albums include Cool Hand Luke, Mission Impossible, Bullitt, The Amityville Horror and Dirty Harry. Schifrin's "Tar Sequence" from Cool Hand Luke was the longtime theme for the Eyewitness News broadcasts on many ABC TV affiliates, as well as Nine News in Australia. CBS Television used the theme of his St. Ives soundtrack for its golf broadcasts in the 1970s and early 1980s.
