A Flock of Seagulls was an English Synth-Pop band formed 1980 in Liverpool, UK by former hairdresser Mike Score (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and brother Ali Score (drums), plus Frank Maudsley (bass) and Willie Woo (guitar). Woo was soon replaced by guitarist Paul Reynolds. The band practised above Mike Score's hair salon, and then started playing clubs, eventually signing a recording contract. In 1982, the group's fourth single "I Ran (So Far Away)", produced by Mike Howlett, the former bass player of the band Gong, became a worldwide hit, reaching number 1 in Australia and the Top 10 in both the US and New Zealand. In late 1982, the band finally found major success in their home country with "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)", taken from their next album Listen (1983), which reached the UK Top 10. The band received plenty of criticism for their idiosyncratic hair and fashion sense, yet they produced some of the era's best synth dance music. Their dramatic style has drawn much criticism and parody, but the band have also been recognized as a pioneering act, capturing the spirit of their time, particularly with the guitar work of Paul Reynolds and sonically multi-layered hits such as "Space Age Love Song", "Telecommunication", and "Modern Love Is Automatic". Standout releases include Modern Love is Automatic EP (1981), and the albums A Flock of Seagulls (1982) and Listen (1983). The 2017 compilations Remixes and Rarities (2017) and I Ran (So Far Away) (2021) are also recommended.
