Albert "Al" Greene aka The Reverend Al Green, is an American soul singer, songwriter and record producer born 1946 in Forest City, Arkansas. He is best known for a series of soul hits in the early 1970s, including "Take me to the River", Tired of Being Alone", I'm Still in Love With You", "Love and Happiness" and "Let's Stay Together". He is sometimes referred to as "The Last of the Great Soul Singers" and was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Green was born the son of a sharecropper, the sixth of ten children. He grew up influenced by the music of Mahalia Jackson, Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. In high school he formed his first band and recorded his first song "Back up Train" as Al Green and the Soul Mates in 1968. His second album, Al Green Gets Next to You (1971), featured his first big hit, "Tired of Being Alone", which sold a million copies and was certified gold, the first of seven consecutive gold singles Green would record in the next couple of years. His next album, Let's Stay Together (1972), solidified his place in soul music, with the title track reaching number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. And the hit singles and albums kept coming for Green right through the '70s. In the '80s he turned more toward gospel music and became more religiously focused. In total, Green released 30 studio albums, the standouts are his four superb releases between 1971-1973: Al Green Gets Next to You, Let's Stay Together, I'm Still in Love With You and Call Me.
