Ash Ra Tempel was a German Kosmiche group formed 1970 in Berlin. Led by guitarist, vocalist Manuel Göttsching, the band also featured Klaus Schulze from Tangerine Dream. High-school friends Göttsching and bassist Hartmut Enke formed Ash Ra Tempel in 1970, after briefly playing together under the name Steeple Chase Bluesband, along with Klaus Schulze on drums. The project started soon after the members had purchased Pink Floyd's sound equipment in London. Ash Ra Tempel released its self-titled debut album in June 1971; it's considered by critics to be a classic of the krautrock genre. Following the album's release, Schulze left for a solo career and subsequent albums utilised different drummers, frequently augmented by additional musicians. In 1972 the band collaborated with Timothy Leary who was living in exile in Switzerland; an album, Seven Up was released in 1973. The band has released many fine albums under the names Ash Ra Tempel, Ashra and The Cosmic Jokers, as well as Göttsching's solo albums. Outstanding albums include Ash Ra Tempel (1971), Schwingungen (1972), Join Inn (1973) and New Age of Earth (1976). Ash Ra Tempel exerted a large and lasting influence on later space rock, krautrock, electronic and ambient music.
