Beggars Opera was a progressive rock band formed 1969 in Glasgow, Scotland by core members guitarist Ricky Gardiner, vocalist Martin Griffiths, and bassist Marshall Erskine. The lineup was filled out to include Marshall Erskine (bass, flute) and Raymond Wilson (drums). After gigging around Glasgow the band were signed to Vertigo Records and recorded their debut album Act One in 1970. The following year they added Virginia Scott on Mellotron and recorded their second album, the excellent Waters of Change. The band generated more success in Europe, in particular Germany, than in their UK home. The core group fragmented in 1976 but continued working with different lineups. Their first three albums: Act One, Waters of Change and Pathfinder are outstanding.
