Benjamin Folds is an American singer-songwriter and record producer born 1966 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. From 1995 to 2000, Folds was the frontman and pianist of the indie rock band Ben Folds Five. After the group temporarily disbanded, Folds performed as a solo artist and has toured all over the world. The group reunited in 2011. Folds grew up learning the piano and playing the songs of Elton John and Billy Joel off the radio. He played in high school bands then while attending Duke University, his band Majosha won the "Battle of the Bands" competition. In 1994 Folds got together with bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee to form Ben Folds Five. The trio released their self-titled debut album in '95 and two years later followed up with the excellent Whatever and Ever Amen, which is arguably their best album. The band went on to release a total of six albums before splitting in 2012. In the meantime Folds had been releasing solo albums starting with the excellent Rockin' the Suburbs from 2001. He has since gone on to release five studio albums and a superb live album. On one of his regular tours to Australia, Folds joined with artists Ben Kweller and Ben Lee to travel the country as The Bens. The trio also went on to record a four-track EP together. Standout solo albums include Rockin' the Suburbs and Ben Folds Live. Standout group releases include Ben Folds Five and Whatever and Ever Amen.
