This is the fifth studio album from English progressive rock band Genesis, released in 1973. It is regarded by many as the highlight of the band's first progressive rock phase, which culminated with their next album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and the ensuing departure of mainstay singer-frontman Peter Gabriel. This is an excellent starting point for both the genre and band for newcomers, particularly for those who may only be familiar with the more radio-friendly Genesis fronted by Phil Collins. As the title suggests, the album is laced with layered criticism of contemporary England, and the creeping Americanisation of the country, punctuated with musical passages which swing between strident prog fanfares and bucolic almost folk-like lyrical tunes. The cover boasts a vitriolic piece titled "The Dream" by Betty Swanwick, which perfectly compliments the themes and tone of the record. The record is as bright as it is sinister in its content, and has stood the test of time to show itself to be one of the best Prog records of all time. This is essential for all Progressive Rock fans.
