Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin aka Enya is an Irish singer, songwriter, record producer and musician born 1961 in Gweedore, County Donegal. Enya began her music career when she joined her family's Celtic folk band Clannad in 1980 on keyboards and backing vocals. She left in 1982 to pursue a solo career, working with producer Nicky Ryan and his wife Roma Ryan as her lyricist. Her sound draws on elements of new age, Celtic folk, classical and church music and is characterised by the use of multitracked vocals and keyboards to produce a dreamy spacious soundscape. Enya's first projects as a solo artist were the soundtrack for The Frog Prince (1984) and the 1987 BBC documentary series "The Celts", which was released as her debut album Enya (1987). She signed with Warner Music which gave her access to international audiences and in 1988 released the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Watermark (1988). The international tep ten hit "Orinoco Flow" propelled her to worldwide fame. Enya has released ten studio albums, standouts include Enya, Watermark, Shepherd Moons and The Memory of Trees. She has sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and has sung in ten languages. In 2017 a new species of fish, Leporinus enyae, found in the Orinoco River area was named after Enya.
