The Magnetic Fields "Holiday" (1994)

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Merge Records, US, 2011, MRG151, 180g Vinyl, Reissue, Incl. Digital Download

Holiday is the Fourth studio album by The Magnetic Fields released in 1994. With this album the band dispensed with the country influences of the former album The Charm of the Highway Strip, instead pulling each song towards a different flavour of pop music. Stephen Merritt was now suppressing his voice beneath the sugary layers of electronic sounds and instrumentations, rather than accentuating it. As for the lyrical content, the psychopathic vagrancy of Charm had disappeared, now replaced by childish nostalgia and a depraved and immature bit of lust. The group makes a welcome return to their familiarly dreamy Eno worship, with tracks "Desert Island", "In My Car" and "Take Ecstasy with Me" all sounding like Another Green World given the My Bloody Valentine treatment and injected with Merritt's sullen anemia. Magnetic Fields would go on after this to release their two finest albums; Get Lost and 69 Love Songs, but Holiday is an excellent album nonetheless and definitely one of the band's finest releases.
