The Anthology '59-'62, released in 2013, is a compilation of Phil Spector produced hit songs recorded between the years 1959-1962. Phil Spector remains one of the most enigmatic figures in American music. After a brief career in the late Fifties as a performer, he reinvented himself as the ultimate backroom boy, writing and producing hits for a whole spectrum of artists. Spector became increasingly obsessed by the production process, creating the so-called 'wall of sound' style. 'My records are built like a Wagnerian opera. They start simple and end with dynamic force, meaning and purpose. I dreamed it up'. Deeply hurt in 1966 when his magnum opus, Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep Mountain High", flopped, he retired from the music business, returning only sporadically to work with first the Beatles (their Let it Be album plus solo LPs by George Harrison and John Lennon), plus a handful of other artists including Dion, Cher and the Ramones. This compilation contains 35 of Spector's greatest early hit records, which re-shaped pop music as we know it.
