Daniel Sewell aka Danny Brown is an American rapper and songwriter born 1981 in Detroit, Michigan. He was described by MTV in 2011 as "one of rap's most unique figures in recent memory." Brown's father, who was only 16 years old when Danny was born, was a house DJ who exposed him to all the music he would spin, as well as music from the likes of Roy Ayers, LL Cool J, Esham, and A Tribe Called Quest. For as long as he could remember, Danny Brown had always wanted to be a rapper but at age 18, he became a drug dealer. After being busted several times, and a stretch on probation, Brown spent eight months in prison. After his release from jail in 2002, he began to take his passion seriously and turn it into a career. He began his career in hip hop group Rese'vor Dogs, alongside fellow Detroit rappers Chip$ and Dopehead. In 2003, the trio independently released an album titled Runispokets-N-Dumpemindariva which received radio airplay for the single "Yes". In 2010, Brown befriended fellow rapper Tony Yayo of G-Unit, and together they recorded their collaborative effort, Hawaiian Snow. After recording and releasing four volumes of his Detroit State of Mind mixtape series, Brown released his first solo studio album The Hybrid in 2010 on Washington-based indie label Rappers I Know. It was this album where Brown began to use his trademark high-pitched voice. Brown has since released four more studio albums. The critically hailed XXX (2011) and Atrocity Exhibition (2016), are regarded by many reviewers as two of the best rap albums of the past decade. Writing about Atrocity Exhibition, one reviewer described it as "both terrifying and exciting. It's terrifying in the aspect that Danny Brown gives the listener a deep look into a life of drugs and bad decisions. The instrumentals are so crazy that they almost sound broken. And the flow of the record is top notch, with every track contributing to the narrative in some form. As for being exciting, Atrocity Exhibition proves how much creativity is still capable with rap and hip-hop. This project has an artistic voice behind that has something meaningful to contribute to the world". His 2019 album uknowhatimsayin¿ is also a standout work. In 2023 Brown teamed up with JPEGMAFIA and the duo released the critically acclaimed Scaring the Hoes, and the same year issued another solo album Quaranta. Standout albums include XXX (2011), Atrocity Exhibition (2016), Scaring the Hoes with JPEGMAFIA (2023), and Quaranta (2023). Despite his professional success, Brown is still dealing with personal issues. In late March 2023 he voluntarily entered in-patient rehab for alcoholism. On June 28, less than a month before embarking on the Scaring the Hoes tour, he shared that he was 90 days sober.
