Archy Ivan Marshall aka King Krule, aka Edgar The Beatmaker, aka Edgar The Breathtaker, is an English singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer and musician born 1994 in Southwark, UK. He began recording music aged 16 under the moniker Zoo Kid, the following year he adopted his present name. Krule released his debut album 6 Feet Beneath the Moon on 13 August 2013, his 19th birthday. More than half of the tracks had already been released on his EPs. The album, which blends elements of punk-jazz with hip hop and trip hop, brought him to prominence, especially in the US, with performances on Conan and the Late Show With Dave Letterman. In December 2015, under the name Archy Marshall, he released an album titled A New Place 2 Drown, which includes a 208-page book of visual art and text, and a ten-minute video documentary, all created by the artist. To-date he has released four studio albums, two live albums, three EP's, and numerous Singles, including the excellent "Dum Surfer". Standout albums include 6 Feet Beneath tghe Moon (2013), The Ooz (2017), Man Alive! (2020), Space Heavy (2023), and the live albums Live on the Moon (2018), and You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down (2021). Krule fuses jazz, chill hip-hop, smooth post-punk, and moody rock flawlessly to create a haunting and full sound with nothing wasted, every sound in every song is a deliberate effort to spark an emotion in the listener. And he has attracted rave reviews from many prominent music critics, such as Pitchfork, which described The Ooz as "a masterpiece of jaundiced vision from one of the most compelling artists alive". During his childhood, Krule was tested for several mental health conditions and he refers to mental health issues, such as depression and insomnia, in some of his lyrics, which touch on romance, sex, aggression, conflict, and depression. These themes link to his literary influences, in which Marshall further elaborated: "Literature, poems, songs are all very similar.. I used to read lots of poetry and sit there for ages trying to decipher the meaning, or work out the narration behind it all, then I found my own form." Krule also embraces art as a means of therapeutic expression, carefully crafting his music, videos and album art such that they reflect his particular aesthetic sensibility. The name "King Krule" is said to be based on the Elvis Presley movie "King Creole", and not on King K. Rool, the villain in a Donkey Kong video game.
