Tyler Gregory Okonma aka Tyler, the Creator, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, visual artist, designer and comedian, born 1991 in Ladera Heights, California. He came to prominence in the early 2010s as the co-founder of alternative hip hop group Odd Future and has issued a string of highly successful solo albums. Seemingly destined for a musical career, at the age of seven Tyler would create covers for his own imaginary albums, including a track-list with song lengths, before he could even make music. At the age of 14 he taught himself piano and over his 12 years of schooling he attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. Before his success in music he worked at Fedex and Starbucks. Tyler co-founded the Odd Future collective in 2007, alongside Hodgy, Left Brain and Casey Veggies. They self-released their debut mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, in November 2008 and the following year Tyler self-released his first solo mixtape, Bastard. That mixtape was eventually ranked 32nd on Pitchfork's list of the Top Albums of 2010. His debut studio album, Goblin was released May 10, 2011, which contained the singles "Yonkers" and "Sandwitches". The descriptors used to categorise his music on websites include: "misanthropic, vulgar, nihilistic, dark, angry, anxious, humorous, hateful, male vocals, ominous, melancholic, violence, rebellious, disturbing, crime, nocturnal, suicide, rhythmic, raw, and anti-religious". Tyler followed up with two relatively unsuccessful albums before ascending to the major league with three critically acclaimed albums: Scum Fuck Flower Boy (2017), Igor (2019), and Call Me if You Get Lost (2021). Over the years, Tyler's style of production has progressed from gritty and dark in early projects to a jazzy and soulful approach with later albums. Aside from his musical productions, Okonma became a significant figure in fashion with his clothing ventures Golf Wang and Le Fleur, and for his collaborations with major brands such as Lacoste, Converse and Louis Vuitton. Okonma is also the founder of the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival music festival, which has been held annually since 2012, and which featured appearances by Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, among others. The artist took his stage name from a Myspace page he used to post his creative projects.
