Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band formed 1999 in Wellington by Chris "Mu" Faiumu (percussion, production, sampling), Dallas Tamaire (vocals, guitar) and Tony Chang (trumpet). The trio developed their sound for a while before beefing up the band's sound with the addition of Warren Maxwell (sax) Tehimana Kerr (guitar), Iain Gordon (keyboards) and Joe Lindsay (trombone). Their musical style has been characterised as a combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Their 2005 debut album Based on a True Story, topped the sales charts in NZ and won them a sway of awards. They followed this four years later with the excellent Dr. Boondigga & The Big BW, which won them a wide audience and spearheaded a series of performance tours to Australia and Europe. The band released Blackbird (2013) and Bays (2015) which were not quite up to the standard set by their early albums. Their great live sound can be heard on two excellent live albums, Live at The Matterhorn from 2001 and 2010's Live at The Roundhouse.
