Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor aka Lorde is a New Zealand electro-pop singer-songwriter born 1996 in Takapuna, Auckland. She is known for employing unconventional musical styles and introspective songwriting. She is one of the most awarded and successful female music artists in the world today. Lorde, whose mother is a Croatian born poet, and father a civil engineer, holds dual NZ and Croatian citizenship. She exhibited talent from an early age, performing at local venues in her early teens. She signed with Universal Music Group in 2009 (aged 13) and collaborated with producer Joel Little in 2011 to start recording. Little is a NZ record producer, musician and Grammy Award-winning songwriter who is known for his work as a writer and producer with artists such as Taylor Swift, Broods, Sam Smith, Imagine Dragons and Ellie Goulding. Lorde's first recording The Love Club EP, initially self-release on SoundCloud then commercially released by UMG, peaked at #2 in NZ and Australia. The single "Royals", helped Lorde became a critical and commercial success, selling more than 10 million units worldwide. It went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Lorde, then aged 16, the youngest artist to earn a number-one single in the United States since Tiffany in 1987. Her debut album Pure Heroine was released in September 2013 to critical acclaim, receiving considerable attention for its portrayal of suburban teenage disillusionment and critiques of mainstream culture. The album Melodrama was then released in June 2017 to widespread critical acclaim. Metacritic rated it #2 on their list of the best-received records of 2017 and it debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200, giving Lorde the number-one album on record charts in the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Her third album Solar Power, released in August 2021 and produced by Jack Antonoff, is a departure from her previous works, with a more down-tempo acoustic feel, which has divided audiences. Lorde's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Time magazine's list of most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014, and the 2014 edition of Forbes 30 under 30. As of June 2017, Lorde had sold over five million albums worldwide.
