Gorky's Zygotic Mynci was a Welsh psychedelic folk and alternative rock band formed 1991 in Carmarthen, Wales, by Euros Childs (vocals, keyboards), John Lawrence (vocals, guitar) and Richard James (bass). The trio met whilst at Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School in Carmarthen. After some early lineup changes, Euros Childs' sister Megan Childs (violin) joined the group and the band signed to the Welsh record label Ankst. The band's first release for the label was Patio (1992), a 10" collection of live, home and studio recordings. The record was hailed by eminent Welshman John Cale as his 'favourite album ever'. The band was also championed by BBC DJ John Peel. The group played a blend of psychedelic folk-pop, featuring unusual instruments such as the harmonium and sitar, with lyrics sung in both Welsh and English. They had eight singles on the UK Singles Chart during their career. Their debut full length album Tatay (1994) was well received, and caught the attention of larger record company Fontana. The band went on to release nine studio albums before disbanding in 2006. Standout releases include Bwyd Time, Barafundle, Spanish Dance Troupe and How I Long to Feel That Summer in my Heart. The 2003 compilation 20 (Singles & EP's '94-'96) is also recommended. In 2000, Gorky's appeared with John Cale in a movie called Beautiful Mistake, in which they performed 1994 album track "O Caroline II". According to the band, the band name is simply meaningless words they strung together, with the word "Mynci" being Welsh for "Monkey". After the band split, Euros Child and Richard James carried on with solo careers.
