The Dixie Dregs is an American jazz rock band formed 1973 in Augusta, Georgia, by Steve Morse (guitar), Andy West (bass), Allen Sloan (violin) and Bart Yarnal (drums). Dixie Dregs is one of the top jazz rock bands in the United States who's instrumental music fuses elements of rock, jazz, country and classical styles. The four members met while students at University of Miami's School of Music. Two more UoM alumni were added when Rod Morgenstein was asked to fill in as drummer after a surfing accident disabled Yarnal, and keyboardist Frank Josephs joined. In 1975, the group's debut album The Great Spectacular was recorded at the University and got them the attention of Capricorn Records, who signed the band. Then followed a number of excellent releases over the next five years, the high point being What If from 1978. In 1981 the band changed their name to "The Dregs" and issued two albums under that name, then reverted to "Dixie Dregs" again for their most recent album 1994's excellent Full Circle. The band still plays periodically and in-demand guitarist Steve Morse has had many side projects including solo albums and stints playing with Deep Purple, Flying Colors, Kansas, Living Loud, and The Prog World Orchestra. Standout Dixie Dregs albums include Free Fall, What If, Night of the Living Dregs, Industry Standard and Full Circle.
