Dredg is an American progressive rock band formed 1993 in Los Gatos, California, by vocalist Gavin Hayes, guitarist Mark Engles, bassist Drew Roulette and drummer and pianist Dino Campanella. The band came together when Los Gatos Middle School students Engles and Campanella teamed up with two friends to play progressive metal music. In May 1998, Dredg independently released their first LP Leitmotif, a concept album about a man traveling the world to cure his moral disease. The story, written by Roulette, was included in the liner notes, in lieu of the actual lyrics. The band toured the US for two years before signing with Interscope Records who re-released Leitmotif in 2001. Their next album, the excellent El Cielo, was another concept album on the theme of Salvador Dali's surrealist painting "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate One Second Before Awakening". As they had done with the liner notes of Leitmotif, Dredg chose not to include the lyrics; instead, they printed letters sent to them by people suffering from sleep paralysis. With each album, Dredg's music became more experimental, increasingly moving from their earlier nu-metal style towards a more progressive art-rock sound. They have released five studio albums and one superb live album. Standouts include Leitmotif, El Cielo, Catch Without Arms and Live at the Fillmore.
