Freakwater is an American alternative country band formed 1989 in Louisville, Kentucky, by vocalists Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Ann Irwin, David Gay (Bass), Jon Spiegel (slide guitar, pedal steel, banjo, Dobro), John Rice (pedal steel, mandolin, fiddle), Brian Dunn (guitar), Lisa Marsicek (fiddle, mandolin), Bob Egan (pedal steel, steel guitar) and Max Konrad Johnston (mandolin, banjo, guitar). The group mixes harmony and melody in idiosyncratic dissonant country-folk that is reminiscent of the Carter Family. Bean, who was previously in Indie rock outfit Eleventh Dream Day, and Irwin are the mainstays of the group and, in addition to their work with Freakwater, collaborated with the Mekons under the name the Freakons, performing original and cover songs about coal mining in Appalachia, England and Wales. Freakwater has released eight studio albums to-date including standouts Feels Like the Third Time, Old Paint, Springtime and End Time.
