Daddy Cool was an Australian rock band formed 1970 in Melbourne, by Wayne Duncan (bass), Ross Hannaford (guitar, vocals), Ross Wilson (vocals, guitar) and Gary Young (drums). They are widely known from their debut single "Eagle Rock" which was released in May 1971 and stayed at number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks, plus their debut album Daddy Who? Daddy Cool! which also reached number 1 and became the first Australian album to sell more than 100,000 copies. Before Daddy Cool, Hannaford and Wilson were together in high-school band The Pink Finks. This morphed into The Party Machine, which had a more radical sound influenced by Frank Zappa, and included Mike Rudd on bass, who would later form Spectrum. Meanwhile, Duncan and Young were together in the band The Rondells. Eventually the four came together, initially as part of an experimental progressive rock ensemble called Sons of the Vegetal Mother. As a side project Duncan, Hannaford, Wilson and Young formed Daddy Cool based on their shared love of 1950s music. Their excellent first two albums Daddy Who? Daddy Cool! and Sex, Dope, Rock 'n' Roll: Teenage Heaven, were produced by musical prodigy Robie Porter, and became instantly successful in Australia and formed a cult following in the US and UK. Other standout releases include Daddy Cool Live! The Last Drive-in Movie Show, and the 2001 compilation Now Listen! The Best of Ross Wilson, which includes singles from The Pink Finks, The Party Machine, Sons of the Vegetal Mother and Daddy Cool, plus tracks from Wilson and Hannaford's next band Mighty Kong, and Wilson's later band Mondo Rock. Breaking up in August 1972, Daddy Cool briefly reformed during 1974–1975 , then again in 2005. Their iconic status was confirmed when they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on 16 August 2006.
