Electronic was an English super-duo formed 1988 in Manchester, UK, by New Order singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. The project started when Sumner was frustrated because his fellow New Order members weren't receptive to his desire to add synth programming to their music. He decided to produce a solo album and called in Johnny Marr for help. As a duo they co-wrote a batch of songs collaborating with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys, and former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos. They released the hugely successful single "Getting Away With It" in December '89 and followed up soon after with their debut album Electronic. The album, a guitar and synth driven fusion of pop-rock and dance music, attracted strong reviews and the duo decided to carry on as a side project to their respective band activities. Electronic released two more studio albums and a swag of excellent singles, before disbanding in 1999. Standout releases include the three albums, Electronic, Raise the Pressure, and Twisted Tenderness, plus the excellent compilation Get The Message.
