Groundhogs | Artist

Groundhogs were a British blues-rock band founded 1963 in London by Tony "TS" McPhee, Peter Cruickshank, John Cruickshank, Dave Boorman and Bob Hall. The band soon reformed as a three piece led by McPhee on guitar and vocals, Peter Cruickshank on bass and Ken Pustelnik coming in on drums. It was this power trio lineup that achieved prominence in the early 1970s as one of the UK's leading blues rock bands, with McPhee up front. Recognising his mastery of the blues, McPhee was the chosen support player for US blues giants John Lee Hooker and Champion Jack Dupree respectively, when they toured the UK and Europe. Between 1969-72 the 'Hogs recorded five excellent albums: Blues Obituary, Thank Christ for the Bomb, Split, Who Will Save The World? and Hogwash. Of these, Thank Christ for the Bomb and Split are superb examples of psychedelic blues-rock, powered by McPhee's guitar mastery and a strong rhythm section.
