Herbert Jay Solomon aka Herbie Mann, was an American jazz flautist born 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. An important early practitioner of world music, Mann played tenor saxophone and clarinet, but was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute. In 1959, following a US State Department sponsored tour of Africa, Mann recorded Flautista!, an album of Afro-Cuban jazz. Soon after he toured Brazil, returning to the US to record with Brazilian musicians, including Antonio Carlos Jobim and guitarist Baden Powell. These albums helped popularize bossa nova in the US and Europe. A prolific recording artist, Mann released 92 studio albums, including collaborations and film soundtracks. Standout albums include Herbie Mann at the Village Gate, Memphis Underground, Impressions of the Middle East and Concerto Grosso in D Blues. On many of his recordings Mann worked with acclaimed jazz guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Mann has been unfairly dismissed by many as just a purveyor of cheesy lounge-jazz, but his impressive body of work shows he was a musical innovator and forerunner of modern jazz fusion and world music styles.
