John "Johnny" Dawson Winter III was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer born 1944 in Beaumont, Texas. Winter was a master guitarist and one of the greatest white bluesmen in history. His earliest work from 1963 included rock'n'roll singles "Road Runner" and "Gangster of Love". By the time of his debut album, 1968's excellent The Progressive Blues Experiment, Winter had become much more of a blues purist. In the '70s Winter formed the band "Johnny Winter And" which featured fellow guitar slinger Rick Derringer and Johnny's brother Edgar who, like his brother, was born an Albino. Johnny produced and played guitar on the excellent Muddy Waters album Hard Again released in 1977. In the one year 1969 Johnny released three masterpiece albums: The Progressive Blues Experiment, Johnny Winter and Second Winter. Other outstanding albums include Johnny Winter And, Still Alive and Well, Nothin' but the Blues and Captured Live! In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003 he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
