Lloyd Cole is an English pop singer and songwriter born 1961 in Buxton, Derbyshire. He is know for his role as lead singer of Lloyd Cole and The Commotions and for his subsequent solo work. Cole (vocals, guitar) met fellow Glasgow University students Stephen Irvine (drums), Neil Clark (guitar), Lawrence Donegan (bass) and Blair Cowan (keyboards), and formed The Commotions. Their debut album Rattlesnakes from 1984, featuring the hit "Perfect Skin", was a huge indie hit worldwide. The songwriting was first class, the music hook-laden but cool and laid-back, and studded with literary references to such figures as Arthur Lee, Norman Mailer, Simone de Beauvoir, Truman Capote and Joan Didion, making it very appealing to the college-set. The band followed up with two more albums before splitting in 1989 when Cole relocated to New York City. As a soloist, Cole has released to-date a total of 16 albums dating from his self-titled debut in 1990. Standout albums include Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces, Don't Get Weird on me Babe and Love Story. Cole continues to perform regularly, as a soloist and with backup band and occasionally with ex-Commotions members. Outside music Cole is an avid golfer on 5.3 handicap. He tied in 11th place on Golf Digest's top 100 list of musicians with Alice Cooper and Dan Tyminski.
