Michael Nyman, CBE is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, born 1944 in Stratford, UK. He is known for numerous film scores and his multi-platinum soundtrack album to Jane Campion's The Piano. Early in his career he provided the music for Peter Greenaway's groundbreaking art-films The Draughtsman's Contract, A Zed & Two Noughts, Drowning by Numbers, The Cook the Thief his Wife & her Lover, and Prospero's Books. His film soundtracks helped popularise modern classical minimalist music. Early in his career Nyman was part of the Portsmouth Symphonia project, alongside Brian Eno, and he worked with the new wave band Flying Lizards. As well as his composition works, Nyman has released 64 studio albums. Outstanding albums include The Draughtsman's Contract, Drowning by Numbers, La traversée de Paris, The Cook the Thief his Wife & her Lover, The Piano, Gattaca, Wonderland and Man on a Wire. The 1992 compilation The Essential Michael Nyman Band is excellent.
