Morton Subotnick is an American composer of electronic music born 1933 in Los Angeles, California. He is one of the pioneers in the development of electronic music and is best known for his 1967 album Silver Apples of the Moon which was the first electronic work commissioned by a record company, Nonesuch. He was one of the founding members of California Institute of the Arts, where he taught for many years. Subotnick was instumental in establishing the first Buchla modular electronic music system (synthesiser) at San Francisco's Tape Music Centre and later at NYU School of the Arts, which enabled the development of electronic music studies and composition in broader academic and artistic circles. Subotnick also pioneered multimedia works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Outstanding albums include Silver Apples of the Moon, The Wild Bull, Sidewinder, Touch and A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur.
