Robbie Basho | Artist
Robbie Basho was an American 'primative' folk guitarist, pianist and singer born 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland. Born Daniel Robinson, he changed his name in honour of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. His music was greatly influenced by his immersion in non-Western arts and cultures from Japan, India and Persia, as well as native American culture. Basho was a guitar virtuoso who employed unusual open tunings and playing techniques similar to those used on middle eastern stringed instruments such as the Sarod. Basho was a friend of fellow guitarists John Fahey and Leo Kottke. His 1978 album Visions of the Country is a masterpiece and other standouts include The Falconer's Arm, The Voice of the Eagle and Zarthus.
