Stephen Cummings | Artist

Stephen Cummings is an Australian rock singer-songwriter and writer born 1954 in Melbourne. As frontman for influential new wave band The Sports, and as a prolific solo artist, Cummings is one of Australia's most critically acclaimed musicians, who has achieved only limited commercial success. Cummings started with The Pelaco Brothers, who transformed into The Sports and were active between 1976-81. Following that Cummings worked as a soloist and released his debut album Senso in 1984, working with former Sports bandmate Martin Armiger and Joe Camiliari from Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons. To-date Cummings has released 20 studio albums of consistently high standard, plus 27 Singles. His work is marked by sophisticated pop songwriting skills, comparable to artists such as Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello. Cummings' 1988 album Lovetown was listed in the top 40 in the book 100 Best Australian Albums. Outstanding releases include A New Kind of Blue, Good Humour, Lovetown, Unguided Tour, Spiritual Bum and Happiest Man Alive. The 1993 compilation Rollercoaster is also highly recommended.
