The Celibate Rifles are an Australian rock band formed 1979 in Sydney by core members Dave Morris on rhythm guitar and Kent Steedman on lead guitar. Within a year they were joined by Damien Lovelock on lead vocals. Originally formed as a punk rock group, with their name a word-play on the Sex Pistols, the group's trademark style became a blend of fast, guitar-driven, hard rock and power pop, with clever lyrics from Lovelock. The band has toured both America and Europe extensively, and released ten consistently good studio albums, of which the 1986 release The Turgid Miasma of Existence is especially good. Other outstanding albums include Sideroxylon, The Celibate Rifles, Roman Beach Party, Blind Ear, Spaceman in a Satin Suit, On The Quiet, and the live album Yizgarnnoff, which was partly recorded at NYC's CBGB.
