The House of Love | Artist

The House of Love is an English alternative rock band, formed 1986 in Camberwell, London, by singer-songwriter-guitarist Guy Chadwick and co-founder and lead guitarist Terry Bickers. The duo were inspired to form a band after hearing Jesus and Mary Chain and Velvet Underground. The initial lineup also included Pete Evans (drums), Chris Groothuizen (bass) and Andrea Heukamp (guitar, vocals). They rose to prominence in 1987 with their first singles "Shine On", "Christine" and "Destroy the Heart" released on the independent label Creation. Their style, with hallmark 'shimmering guitars' sound, has been cited as an influence by shoegaze bands Slowdive and Ride. In 1993 Evans quit the band and the music business, causing the remaining members to drift apart. Chadwick completed their fourth album Audience With the MInd, single handedly, before calling a halt to the band after the albums's release. Chadwick and Bickers reformed the band in 2003 and have released two further albums. Of the band's six studio albums, standouts include The House of Love (1988), The House of Love (1990) and Babe Rainbow (1992). Also recommended are two excellent live albums, Live at the BBC and Live at the Lexington 13.11.13.
