Fatima Mansions | Artist

The Fatima Mansions was an Irish art rock group formed 1988 in Cork, Ireland, by Cathal Coughlan (vocals, keyboards), Nick Allum (drums), Zac Woolhouse (keyboards), Aindrias O'Gruama (guitar) and Hugh Bunker (bass). Coughlan was previously with Irish indie/new wave favourites Microdisney. The band, who were championed by DJ John Peel, who famously stated he could "listen to Cathal Coughlan sing the phone book", often courted controversy with religion, dictators, empires and general authority being targets for Coughlan's vitriol. They enjoyed some Top 10 Chart success with singles "(Everything I Do) I It For You", "Blues for Ceausescu" and "Popemobile to Paraguay". Before disbanding in 1996, they released five studio albums, one live album, and many excellent EPs and Singles. Standout albums include Viva Dead Ponies, Valhalla Avenue and Lost in the Former West. The 1994 four track EP Popemobile is also excellent. The band took their name from the post WWII era Fatima Mansions corporation public housing flats in Rialto, Dublin.
