Gabriel Yared | Artist
Gabriel Yared is a French-Lebanese composer born 1949 in Beirut, Lebanon. He is best known for his work in French and American cinema, notably the classic French films Betty Blue and Camille Claudel. He later worked on English-language films, particularly those directed by Anthony Minghella. Yared began playing accordion and piano at an early age. When Yared was 14, his piano teacher died and Yared replaced him as the organist of Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. Later he travelled to France and studied music at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, as a non-registered student. After a brief period in Brazil, he went back to France, where he met and collaborated with the Costa Brothers, Jacques Dutronc, Françoise Hardy, Chrles Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu and numerous other musicians. Yared has scored over 50 movie soundtracks, standouts include Betty Blue, The English Patient, Amelia, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, and Troy. In 2004, Yared's score for the film Troy was rejected by Warner Bros less than a month before the film's opening, and replaced by a James Horner score. Critics believe the Yared score is the far superior work. Yared's latest work is the soundtrack to the animated film Dilili à Paris.
