This Kind of Punishment was a New Zealand post-punk band formed 1983 in Stratford by Peter Jefferies (vocals, piano, drums, percussion) and Graeme Jefferies (guitar, bass, violin, vocals). The band was formed by the brothers after the breakup of their previous outfit Nocturnal Projections. Their first self-titled album was recorded on 4-track recorder borrowed from Chris Knox and released in an edition of 1000 on the Flying Nun label in 1983. It was reissued on the Roof Bolt label in 1998. Their second album, A Beard of Bees, was recorded with an extended line-up, and self-released on vinyl in 1984. In The Same Room, their third album, was released in 1987 by Flying Nun. Their only other recordings are the 1988 live album Live '85, the 1985 EP entitled 5 by Four, and the 2016 Single "Radio Silence". Although their recorded output is so sparse, they have built a strong cult following for their Lo-fi, experimental post-punk sound which is darkly atmospheric, brooding, and constantly creative, something like a cross between the Durutti Column and Wire. Peter Jefferies also has Six solo album releases to his name, while his brother Graeme has One, the excellent Messages for the Cakekitchen from 1987.
