Zoviet France is a music group formed 1980 in Newcastle upon Tyne by Ben Ponton, Robin Storey, Peter Jensen and Lisa Hale. After a series of lineup changes, the band now consists of the duo Ben Ponton and Mark Warren. The band's music can be categorised as industrial drone, incorporating dissonant passages, industrial textures and ambient soundscapes. The UK based Ambient Music Guide describes the band "Zoviet France is a strong contender for the ultimate cult electronic band. Anonymous, uncompromising, wryly humorous and famously fond of weird album packaging". They have released 21 albums to-date including collaborations with artists Jim O'Rourke, The Hafler Trio, and Fossil Aerosol Mining Project. Standout albums include Shouting at the Ground, Just an Illusion, Shadow Thief of the Sun and Patina Pooling. The band's correct nomenclature is :zoviet*france: and only they know what that means.
