Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed 1988 in Sacramento, California by Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums) and Dominic Garcia (bass). The lineup changed over time with Chi Cheng (bass) and Frank Delgado (keyboards, turntable) being added. The band is known as one of the most experimental groups from the alternative metal scene, and are sometimes dubbed as "the Radiohead of metal". Their first two album releases were critically successful but it was their third album White Pony (2000) which was their commercial breakthrough. Its lead single "Change (In the House of Flies)" was huge for them and the track "Elite" won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. It was also the band's first of three albums to be certified platinum in the United States. Bassist Chi Cheng tragically died in a car accident in 2013 and was replaced by Sergio Vega. On the side, Moreno fronts supergroup Saudade alongside members from Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, and Medeski Martin & Wood. Standout Deftones albums include Around the Fur, White Pony, Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes and Koi no Yokan.
