Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is a Japanese Psych Rock band formed 1995 in Nagoya, by core member guitarist Kawabata Makoto. The initial lineup included Kawabata, along with Koizumi Hajime (drums), Suhara Keizo (guitar), and Cotton Casino (vocals, synthesizer). Kawabata, who played in many Japanese bands and was even a member of Daevid Allen's Gong for a period, initially formed Acid Mothers Temple with the intention of creating "extreme trip music" by editing and dubbing previous recordings, being influenced by progressive rock, Karlheinz Stockhausen and krautrock. The band collaborated regularly with with Psych maestros Daevid Allen and Gong and a collaboration of Acid Mothers Temple and Gong called "Acid Mothers Gong" performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The band's sound combines elements from psychedelia, space rock, noise and jazz sounds, with layer upon layer of guitar distortion creating a druggy, distorted, hypnotic, fusion that induces a “higher” state of consciousness in the listener. A prodigious recording outfit, the band has released 67 studio albums to-date, over a period of 23 years. Standout albums include La Nòvia (2000), Univers zen ou de zéro à zéro (2002), Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars (2007) and High on New Heaven: Live in New Haven (2015). The band has released albums frequently on a number of international record labels as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family label established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective. Acid Mothers Temple also hosts its own yearly festival in Japan, appropriately titled Acid Mothers Festival, since 2002, which has been attended by Yamazaki Maso of Masonna, Yoshida Tatsuya, Mani Neumeier, Kuriyama Jun, Ohpia, and Seiichi Yamamota of Boredoms.
