Asian Glow | Artist
Shin Gyeongwon aka Asian Glow is a Korean rock musician born 2001 in Seoul, South Korea. Shin, along with contemporaries such as Parannoul, is one of the new group of Korean rock stars creating the music of a generation right out of their bedrooms. His music, which has been categorized as Post-emo or fifth-wave emo, incorporates catharsis, emotional urgency, and deep sentimentality into the sounds of noise pop, shoegaze, inditronica and other genres, whith a little added fuzziness. Prior to the Asian Glow project, Shin was a member of the shoegaze band FØG, and also made music under project names Gyn and Doof. In 2020, Shin released his first album Nosferadoof under the stage name Asian Glow, which gained attention from fans of emo music on YouTube and Reddit. His second album Cull Ficle was released in 2021, attracting positive critical reviews, including the following from an RYM contributor: "From the unnerving, pixelized and washed-out cover art to the lengthy and sometimes silly names of tracks here, Cull Ficle hides inside it some of the best rock songs of the entire year." Later that year, he released the excellent three-way split album Downfall Of The Neon Youth together with collaboration partners Parannoul and Brazilian shoegaze/slowcore musican sonhos tomam conta, aka Moondaughter. 2022 was a particularly productive year for Shin, seeing the release of no less than four EP's, two live albums, and the studio album Stalled Flutes, Means. In August 2022, Shin also performed alongside Parannoul, Brokenteeth, Wapddi, Della Zyr and Fin Fior at Digital Dawn, a concert that celebrated the burgeoning online Korean indie scene. 2023 saw the release of another collaboration work with sonhos tomam conta, followed by two more solo albums, Unwired Detour and Shin's latest, 11100011 in January 2025. From Shin's catalogue to-date, standout releases include the studio albums Cull Fircle (2021), Downfall of the Neon Youth (2021), Stalled Flutes, Means (2022), 11100011 (2025), plus Live @ Digital Dawn (2022), and the EP's Weatherglow and Paraglow, both from 2022. In interview, Shin has cited bands such as Taking Back Sunday and Brand New as pivotal in shaping his lyrical depth and musical approach. The name "Asian Glow" comes from the condition many east asian people experience, where their face flushes red after drinking alcohol.
