Be-Bop Deluxe was an English progressive rock band formed 1972 in Wakefield, UK by Bill Nelson, Ian Parkin, Robert Bryan, Nicholas Chatterton-Dew and Richard Brown. After the first album Axe Victim Nelson reformed the band and brought in Paul Jeffreys and Milton Reame-James formerly of Cockney Rebel. Stylistically, the band took elements from progressive rock, glam rock and hard guitar rock, all powered by Nelson's guitar artistry. Nelson, who was also singer, songwriter and producer has been described as "one of the most underrated guitarists of the seventies Art Rock movement". Outstanding albums include Axe Victim (1974), Futurama (1975), Sunburst Finish (1976), Modern Music (1976) and Live! in the Air Age (1977). When Be-Bop Deluxe split in 1978, Bill Nelson went on with a successful solo career, releasing dozens of fine albums. Nelson also worked with Roger Eno, Laraaji and others in the Ambient/Art Rock combo Channel Light Vessel, who delivered two albums. He also fronted new wave outfit Bill Nelson's Red Noise who released only one album, the excellent Sound-on-Sound in 1979. Be-Bop Deluxe achieved critical acclaim but only moderate commercial success during the mid to late 1970s, and they continue to have a strong following to the present day.
