Candlemass is a Swedish doom metal band established 1984 in Stockholm by bassist, songwriter and bandleader Leif Edling and drummer Matz Ekström. The band had a defining influence on doom metal, and the genre itself is named after their 1986 debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. The band has split and reformed several times and cycled through numerous members including vocalists Robert Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus, Messiah Marcolin and Mats Levén. Their music carried forth Black Sabbath's heavy metal style and took the slow pundind drums and monstrous riffs to a new level. As one reviewer put it "The darkness and misery here is something to behold". The band has released thirteen studio and four live albums. Standouts include their first four albums: Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams and Tales of Creation, plus Candlemass Live (1990), Candlemass (2005), and Doomology archival collection from 2010.
