Charles Lloyd is an American jazz musician born 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee. Lloyd's style of jazz draws on his upbringing exposed to blues, gospel and Jazz from an early age. He is also credited with being one of the first Jazz players to anticipate world music, by incorporating different cultural styles into his music. Lloyd moved to Los Angeles to earn a degree in music at the University of Southern California where, at night, he played in jazz clubs with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Eric Dolphy. In '64 he signed with CBS Records and formed is own band The Charles Lloyd Quartet. Since '89 Lloyd has been signed to ECM records. Outstanding albums include Dream Weaver, Fish Out of Water, Notes From Big Sur, The Call, Canto and Hyperion With Higgins.
