Chrome is an American post punk band founded 1975 in San Francisco by Damon Edge and Gary Spain. Their music blended elements of punk, psychedelia and industrial, and was influenced by Arabic music following a visit to Morocco by Edge. The duo recruited John Lambdin (guitar) and Mike Low (guitar, vocals) to self-record and produce their first album The Visitation. They pitched the album to Warner Brother who rejected it, so Edge set up his own label Siren Records and released the album. Soon after, Mike Low left the band and was replaced by guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Helios Creed. The band's second album Alien Soundtracks got a glowing review in the UK music paper Sounds, and Chrome gained a cult reputation in the UK and in Europe. With Creed's input the band began using cut-up and collage techniques and heavily processed sound to create a kind of sci-fi punk style. Their third album, 1979's Half Machine Lip Moves, became their best known work and was listed at No. 62 in The Wire magazine's list of "100 Records That Set the World on Fire". It was also cited by some critics as the "beginning of industrial rock". The band is still active and has released 25 studio albums. Outstanding albums include Alien Soundtracks, Half Machine Lip Moves, Red Exposure, 3rd From the Sun and the archival release Half Machine From the Sun: The Lost Chrome Tracks From '79-'80.
