David Byrne | Artist

David Byrne is a Scottish-American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, artist, actor, writer and filmmaker born 1952 in Dumbarton, UK. Two years after his birth, his parents moved to Ontario, Canada, then moved to the USA making their home in Arbutus, Maryland when Byrne was eight years old. Byrne is widely known as a founding member, principal songwriter and lead singer and guitarist of Talking Heads who were active between 1975-92. He started his musical career in a high school band called Revelation, following that he was one half of a duo named Bizadi with Marc Kehoe, then he formed a band called the Artistics with fellow Rhode Island School of Design student Chris Frantz. That band dissolved in 1974 and Byrne moved to New York City and was joined by Frantz and his girlfriend Tina Weymouth. Byrne's first solo work was the score for The Catherine Wheel, a contemporary dance work choreographed by Twyla Tharp. That same year 1981 saw the release of his masterpiece collaboration with Brian Eno, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. His first non-stage/film solo work was 1989's Rei Momo, which incorporated various Latin American dance music styles. To-date Byrne has released 18 albums, including collaborations with artists including Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Fatboy Slim and St. Vincent. Standout solo albums include The Catherine Wheel, Rei Momo, David Byrne, Look Into the Eyeball and Grown Backwards. Byrne also founded the world music record label Luaka Bop originally to release Latin American compilations, but it has grown to include music from Cuba, Africa, the Far East and beyond.
