Emmylou Harris is an American country singer, songwriter, and musician born 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama. She has released dozens of albums and singles and won 14 Grammys, the Polar Music Prize, and been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Harris started singing folk songs in Greenwich Village and in 1969 recorded her debut album Gliding Bird which was unsuccessful. In 1971 she resurfaced and was spotted by The Byrds' Chris Hillman who introduced her to Gram Parsons as a potential backup singer. She joined Parsons' touring band and sung on his excellent solo albums GP and Grievous Angel. Parsons died in 1973 and Harris carried on her solo career. Between 1975-78 Harris recorded four excellent albums back to back: Pieces of the Sky, Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner and Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town. This body of work established her reputation as one of the leading American country performers and she went on to record many more fine albums including the 1995 masterpiece Wrecking Ball. Other outstanding albums include Roses in the Snow, Red Dirt Girt and Stumble Into Grace.
