Empyrium is a German symphonic folk/doom metal band formed 1994 in Hendungen, Germany, by Markus Stock aka Ulf Theodor Schwadorf. The vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Stock is joined by Andreas Bach (synthesizer), Nadine Mölter (cello, flute) and Thomas Helm (vocals, piano, keyboards). Their early work can be considered doom metal with folk and symphonic influences, combining harsh and operatic male vocals with slow guitar parts and atmospheric sounds. Their later work has more of a neofolk influence, employing acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar, violin, cello and flute. The band has to-date released five studio and two live albums. Standout works include Songs of Moors and Misty Fields, Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays, Weiland and Into the Pantheon (live).
