Ensemble Modern is an international modern classical ensemble formed 1980 in Frankfurt, Germany, by members of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. The group of around 20 members is dedicated to performing and promoting the music of modern composers including John Adams, George Benjamin, György Ligeti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich and Frank Zappa. Each year, Ensemble Modern gives approximately 100 concerts and an average of 70 new works, including about 20 premieres. There are over 100 albums featuring the orchestra's performances, some standouts include Zappa: The Yellow Shark, Ensemble Modern Plays Frank Zappa: Greggery Peccary & Other Persuasions, Steve Reich: Music for Eighteen Musicians and George Benjamin: Palimpsests.
