Espers | Artist
Espers is an American psychedelic folk band formed 2002 in Philadelphia, PA, by the trio of songwriter Greg Weeks (vocals, multi-instruments), Meg Baird (vocals, guitar, dulcimer) and Brooke Sietinsons (guitar, percussion). They later expanded to a sextet including Otto Hauser (drums), Helena Espvall (Cello) and Chris Smith (bass). The band is part of the emerging US indie neo-folk scene which is influenced by late sixties UK folk-psych acts such as Vashti Bunyan and Incredible String Band. Their self-titled debut album in 2004 attracted positive reviews for its "beautiful delicate, mysterious and deeply psychedelic sound, hypnotic and addictive". Then followed an album of cover songs, The Weed Tree, in 2005, featuring songs by artists as diverse as Nico, The Durutti Column and Blue Öyster Cult. Their third album, II, containing original material was released in 2006, and their fourth album, III, was released in 2009. All four of their studio albums released to-date are recommended. The band members also release solo works plus collaborations under the names The Valerie Project, The Baird Sisters and Heron Oblivion.
